The countdown is on for publicly traded and big companies to return Payment Protection Program loans meant to help small businesses and self-employed people to weather the economic shutdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic. U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has given these big companies until May 7 to return loans “in good faith.”

U.S. Treasury Department said last week that companies taking loans in excess of $2 million will be subject to federal audits and possible criminal charges. Companies and institutions have until May 7 to return loans with no questions asked.

Even elite private schools with huge endowments took PPP loans. Other private institutions considered taking the taxpayer-backed loans, but then decided the funds weren’t intended for them. Nick Saracino, a spokesman for Francis Parker, a private boarding school in Chicago, said “those particular funds were not intended for institutions like us.”

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin is calling on private schools with “significant endowments” to return PPP loans they have received.

“It has come to our attention that some private schools with significant endowments have taken #PPP loans. They should return them,” Mnuchin wrote on Twitter Friday.

Metroplex Social has compiled a list of publicly traded and privately held big companies that have committed to return PPP loans so far, and here they are:
