Texas Governor Abbott just closed schools in Texas through May 4, 2020 which means you get to be stuck at home a little longer. The decision was announced at a press conference March 31 and is an attempt to further mitigate spread of the coronavirus, the pathogen that causes COVID-19. Here’s what that means for you:
Texas Schools Are Closed Through May 4
Due to the on-going effort to lessen the spread of coronavirus and flatten the curve, Governor Abbot announced the continuing closure of all Texas schools through May 4.

School Auto Payments
Due to the extension of school closures and the fact that many parents have lost their income, all SchoolCafe automatic school meal payments have been cancelled indefinitely.
Comfort Food Care Packages
Governor Greg Abbott today announced the Comfort Food Care Package (CFCP) program to provide meals for at-risk youth and families in communities across Texas as the state responds to COVID-19.
As part of the program, participating restaurants offer CFCPs for patrons to purchase on behalf of families and youth in need. Each care package contains enough food to feed a family of 5 to 6 and will be delivered to recipients’ homes.
Families interested in utilizing the CFCP program should contact their local Family and Youth Success Program for more information.
The program is a partnership between the Governor’s Public Safety Office, the Texas network of Family and Youth Success Programs (formerly called Services to At-Risk Youth), Favor Delivery, and the Texas Restaurant Association.
FREE Breakfast and Lunch at Schools
Many school districts across North Texas have also begun free meal distributions to kids and students in their districts. For instance, Denton ISD currently has 15 locations that any child through the age of 18 can receive lunch and breakfast to-go on weekdays. This is an extension of the USDA summer program and is 100% free.
Other school districts that offer meal pick up in North Texas include Lewisville ISD, Frisco ISD, McKinney ISD, Dallas ISD, Fort Worth ISD, Arlington ISD, Decatur ISD, Desoto ISD, Duncancille ISD…however this is not a comprehensive list so use the link below to find your North Texas school district that is giving out FREE meals to kids!

Texans Ordered To Limit Activity To Essential Only
Texans are also ordered to limit their activity to essential services only. He also directed Texans and business owners to a list of defined essential businesses and services.
Examples of essential activities include: getting groceries, picking up food at a restaurant, going on a walk or jog, as long as you keep a distance of at least 6 feet from other persons.
Governor Abbott expressed his pleasure that Texans have mostly been following the order which has helped slow down the spread of coronavirus, but also reminded residents that penalties are possible and will be pursued for those that don’t follow the order. Updates to follow.
