10 Homeschool Science Experiments To Do During Social Distancing

1. Inertia Penny Experiment

Subject: Inertia, Newton’s Laws Of Motion

Supplies

  • 5 Pennies
  • Index Card
  • Glass of Water

This inertia experiment is great for all ages and very adaptable. Learn about Newton’s Laws of motion using pennies! Learn about how to set this experiment up here.

2. Handwashing Science Experiment

Subject: Germs and bacteria

Supplies:

  • Lotion
  • Pepper
  • Pencil and Paper

Teach kids how easily “germs” spread with this visual representation! Easy set up and clean up. Read More about this experiment here.

3. DIY Robotic Arm

Subject: Mechanics and technology

Supplies

  • Cardboard
  • Box cutter (optional)
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun and sticks
  • String

Cut out cardboard pieces and use crafting supplies to create a super cool robotic arm! This simple intro to mechanics, robotics, and even human systems/muscles will be so satisfying once completed. Check out the video and read a full tutorial here.

4. Make Slime!

Subject: Physical and chemical changes, properties of matter

Supplies:

  • contact solution
  • glue
  • food coloring
  • shaving cream
  • others depending on the type of slime

Explore physical versus chemical changes by creating slime! Your kids do this so often already, but have they ever thought about it more scientifically? Can you take apart the ingredients of slime after combining them? How do different ingredients change the properties of slime? PS: This experiment is so much fun, we included it on our list of fun things to do indoors.

5. Inflate A Balloon! Simple Science Experiments For Kids

Supplies:

  • baking soda
  • vinegar
  • clear bottle
  • balloon

Explore chemical reactions with this homeschool science experiment! You’ll probably have the ingredients in your pantry. Your kid will be amazed to watch their balloon magically fill up with air! Read a step by step here.

6. Liquid Density Experiment For Middle School

Subject: Density

Supplies:

  • Mason jar or container
  • Measuring cup
  • a few ounces of honey, water, vegetable oil, and rubbing alcohol
  • Food coloring
  • small objects to test density of (pennies, m&m, etc)

Test the density of household liquids and small objects by layering them in a mason jar! Have your students hypothesize which liquids and objects have higher densities, then do this experiment to double check! Full info here.

7. Foil Boat STEM Experiment

Subject: Engineering

Supplies:

  • Foil
  • Pennies
  • water
  • bowl/container

Have a friendly competition and see who can engineer the strongest foil boats! The one who can carry the most pennies wins.

8. Rube Goldberg Machine

Subject: Energy, Engineering

Supplies:

  • ANYTHING!

A Rube Goldberg machine is a series of events that results in one final goal. You can use it to switch a light on, or feed your dog, for example. The great thing about Rube Goldberg machines is that they are adaptable and can be as simple or complicated as you wish! Give your student a minimum “step” requirement and see what they come up with.

9. Walking Water Experiment

Subject: Absorption, Color wheel

Supplies:

  • Paper towels
  • water
  • cups
  • food coloring

Show your kiddo how water is absorbed and why by talking about porosity! Create your own rainbow with this walking water experiment.

10. Cavity Experiment

Subject: Germs, Teeth, Sugar,

Supplies:

  • Various drinks like milk, coke, water, juice
  • hard boiled eggs, one per drink
  • cups
  • toothbrush

Show your kids the importance of being careful what we eat and drink by showing them the effect of drinks on hard boiled eggs and their shells! Enamel on our teeth is similar to the shell of an egg, so watch them be amazed when they see the effects of sugar and coke on the eggshells!
